Android Goes Premium: Meet Googlebook
At today's Android Show | I/O Edition, Google announced Googlebook — a new category of premium Android laptops, positioning them above traditional Chromebooks.
What Is Googlebook?
Googlebook isn't a single Google-made device, but a partner brand similar to Chromebooks. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo will launch the first models in Fall 2026, featuring premium materials and a distinctive light bar design.
Gemini AI at the Core
Googlebook puts AI front and center:
- Magic Pointer: Shake your cursor and Gemini analyzes on-screen content — compare images, create shopping composites, or add calendar events from emails
- Create My Widget: Describe a widget in natural language, and Gemini generates it on the fly, pulling data from Gmail, Calendar, and search
Cross-Device Features
- Cast My Apps: Run phone apps directly on the Googlebook
- Quick Access: Browse, search, and transfer phone files from the laptop's file manager
Strategic Significance
Industry observers see Googlebook as a signal that Google is gradually shifting its laptop strategy from ChromeOS toward an Android + Gemini ecosystem. While Chromebooks still get 10-year lifecycles, Googlebook represents a clear step upmarket.
